Iconic US camping brands to be sold in Britain

Camping gear by US outdoor brands Kelty and Wenzel is to be sold in the UK.

Outdoor leisure specialists SMG Europe have done an exclusive deal to distribute the iconic brands in Britain and Ireland along with Insta-Bed products.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, Kelty manufactures backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, child carriers and camping accessories. Their products currently include the AirPitch range of inflatable tents.

The brand was launched in the US in 1952 by Asher "Dick" Kelty who was one of the first product designers to produce and market an external-frame backpack designed specifically for civilian use. He is considered to be the inventor of the aluminium-framed backpack.

Wenzel has been in existence since 1887 and provides a range of camping gear for the family market. Instga-Bed sells a variety of inflatable beds with built-in pumps.

SMG managing director Chris Northmore said, "We are very pleased to add Kelty to our brand portfolio. Kelty is a very technical, well known and respected brand in the US and we are looking forward to establishing the brand in the UK outdoor market."

Kelty, Wenzel and Insta-Bed are all part of the American Recreation group.
