George Mallory’s Everest clothing system on display

Since 1920s it was an accepted truth that they were poorly equipped and clad – as George Bernard Shaw said, “ like a Connemara tea party surprised by a snowstorm”, And that this would have greatly reduced their chances of actually going all the way to the summit, 30 years before Hillary and Tenzing.
In 1999 Mallory’s body was found high on Everest, giving no indication whether or not they had reached the summit. However, the samples of clothing recovered did bring into focus how these early mountaineers
equipped themselves for the extremes of the world’s highest mountain.
The Mountain Heritage Trust has scientifically reproduced the clothing system that Mallory wore on his final, fateful climb. Earlier this year it was taken to and worn on Everest. The objective conclusion is that the clothing worn in 1924 was about 95 per cent as efficient as a modern Everest clothing system – and that it would not have hindered them in their attempt on the summit.
The full clothing system went on display in the National Mountaineering Exhibition at Rheged, when it was opened by Doug Scott, CBE, the first Englishman to be known to have reached the summit of Everest.
