Forest sites extend ranger walks

Forest Holidays has added more guided walks to its list of site-based activities.

The walks are all designed to help campers get the most from their stay in the woodland environment.

Forestry Commission trained rangers lead all the events, so their knowledge of the forest and its inhabitants is second-to-none.

They are employed by Forest Holidays, though, so they can devote their undivided attention to passing on their knowledge to people staying on Forest Holidays sites.

Nature and Discovery events vary from site-to-site and change with the seasons, but a core programme is available at many sites. For example, start one of your days as the first rays of sun begin to penetrate the canopy by joining the Forest Awakes experience to hear the dawn chorus.

Daytime events include Birds on Tour, which introduces you to an entirely new world going on above your head. The forests boast a stunning variety of feathered inhabitants and a Forest Holidays ranger helps you pick out the ones you may have never seen before.

On a Tree Stalking trip you will discover what trees actually do, their role in nature and their importance to planet Earth. You will also get the opportunity to identify the insects and animals that make each tree their home.

During the Awesome Animals experience, the ranger explains what makes the forest habitat particularly suitable for the different kinds of animals.

If you are lucky, you may even see deer, badgers, or some of the forest’s other more elusive animals. And at night, there is an entirely different cast of animals awakening in the forest as others go to sleep, so join the Night Watch to learn about moths, owls, badgers and a whole host of other nocturnal creatures.

Forest Holidays make a small charge for its ranger-led activities and they can be booked on-site or in advance when you make your site booking.
